Its the same creator as rockford?

That immediately fills me with dread, the last time we used a new map by that guy, which was rockford at the time, his constant fiddling and changing of his workshop versions completely destroyed the US server we had going.

Even if the map is amazing and is all we could want, I would need some kind of assurance that hes not going to be fubbernucking around with the older versions of the map on his workshop, and just upload NEW versions, so that he doesnt destroy another thing we wana do.

I don't see how performing updates to the map is something bad. There is also a few solutions to that problem.

We could:

- The server could download the map from the Workshop each time it starts up. (However, this comes with some bad things such as the possibility of the map not downloading if the workshop is down, or the creator making an update with malicious code)

- The best thing would probably be to re-upload the map into the content packs so we can update the map ourselves when we want to.

You're missing the glaring issue of the changes being significant enough to break things such as:
Dupes, entity placement, door placement and scripts, the "area" plugin, jail plugin settings and probably more.

That's something that we can't really afford to have is it?

This could be avoided by my second alternative above.

It just feels like further waste of development resources, taking time away from what precious dev time LL has right now... just for the sake of a map that doesn't even look that spectacular.

The issue wasnt just him updateing the map, the issue was how he went about doing it.

He released V1.0, servers got it, installed it, coded their entire gamemode around it, spawn locations, code callbacks etc.

Then he releases V1.1, but rather than a new version on the workshop, he would OVERRIDE the old V1.0 that everone was useing, completely fucking their servers and bringing them down for days at a time, he did this repeatedly and it ended up causeing the US server to go down and out for almost 2 months, eventualy people got frustrated and just left and the US server died.

Even if his map is amazing, and i have no doubt he has learned alot since he made rockford, if he goes about updating the map like he did rockford, then theres no point in useing the map until at least a year after its release.

Again, this can be avoided by my second alternative provided before. Just download the map and re-upload it to the workshop under the name RP_Truenorth_LL. Then we could update the map as we like and are not affected by anything he does. This wouldn't take more than 30 minutes to do.

He also allows this as stated on his profile:
Quote:If you are asking for permission to use any of my models, textures, or maps for anything you want, the answer is yes. Do what you please as long as you wont be making money off it.
Do note rp_truenorth is made by the same man who created Rockford. When mapping, you learn a lot from each project and learn a lot of new things each day. So from looking at the video, he is using more props then brushes which is great and also helps with lag a bit.

Rockford has always been more colourful then Evocity in my eyes so hopefully this new map Statua is releasing has the same feeling.
Not again....
I updated my first post about RP_Truenorth with some pictures and a map overview.

EDIT #3: I just got a reply from the author about the map with an overview and more pics.

Well, he really is pushing the limits of Hammer & source and I love it.

I just found the following map when browsing Facepunch forums. It's highly detailed and will be released on Christmas morning!

Source

Looks decent, though the dangers of a new map is its unreliability and probable unfinished things etc,

Also there are some areas that kind look very plain, like if you look in the video at around 2:25 or so the roads kinda feel empty.

And another thing worth noting is that the creator doesn't say much on the map itself, nor does he describe it, there's really no information to go on from what I've seen in the source link, other than the date of release, unless I am missing something.

Interesting find though.

Empty road = more place to make RPs

Just looking at it made me think of many ideas such as an ambush by robbers.

Also I love how it uses vertical map space as well and not just horizontal.

I feel Arma had a bit of inspiration for this map. Evocity 2 had two layers but only one road so pretty boring.
It does look promising, I await its release so i can scrutinize it to the 11th degree to see if its actualy worth a damn.
I really like the small Town approach to the Map. Finally not a wannabe Metropolis. More immersion when blasting Country Roads #loveit
