@Jono‍ is certainly right about the money. The salary increases were the most ridiculous solution to the whole "no passive money income" situation, where you've basically just created inflation. Except there's barely anything left to buy with that inflated money at this point.

Yea economy is borked up. Rules are wack, and there needs to be in-game mechanics to promote roleplay.

Let me give you guys a guide to restarting LimeLight in the correct way:

1. The first step that would need to occur is for staff to get on board, this sounds relatively simple when the whole community is screaming for change - but they have ignored us for 3 years so far, so this actually might be the most challenging part!

2. Determine what can stay and what can go. I'm talking in multiple avenues, not just rules. Look at the economy, hyper inflated systems, performance dragging vehicles, the map, parts of the gamemode may be better off being disabled. Right now it's a jumbled fucked up mess of a system and architecture. It's time to get rid of the headaches for everyone and cut all the shit not essential. Really my recommendation here is to restart the economy from scratch, go through the DB for anyone that bought money packs and re-issue them with a fresh economy. See below steps for more details on this:

3. Once you've cut all the excess fat and worked with the community to understand what really matters, is it an in-depth system for police to write tickets, for criminals to create mob-like organizations, property ownership?

3. In regards to the above step focus on what matters, systems that promote fun and roleplay. Think about implementing something such as character slots and long-term property ownership. Imagine having a house in the same place every time you login. A few MVP (Minimum viable product) systems can be recycled or built out in order to reach a fresh slate that is fun, exciting and interesting for everyone involved. The scope on these systems will need to be tamed in order to deliver anything in a reasonable timeline, but the dev team should have fresh architecture which will aid in this process.

4. Revitalize the community. People are getting sick and tired of the stagnation. You need to get some excitement and hype built up around this rework. I've never seen such a small community so disconnected, hardly anyone outside of clans play games outside of gmod with each other. This needs to change for the community to be successful, interact with your community. Get a roadmap and progress bar of how the changes are coming along.

5. Release it. Shut down the old game-mode and release a fresh, clean game-mode with a new set of rules, and a more chilled vibe in the staff team. Don't do some "Lite" version of LimeLight, ya'll got like 30 active people - no chance that would work. Just YOLO it.

It's really not that crazy of an idea. I'm sure the staff team will laugh off this idea, but realistically this is what needs to happen for LimeLight to survive. You have a dev team ready to go, you have a community full of creative ideas who I'm sure would be open to this. You would bring back all of the players at once and you know if you do it right you'll get new members rushing through the door.

In order for this to really succeed you're going to need a single person at the head of the project, who is capable of listening to staff & community feedback, designing the system requirements for the development team, and can be a liason with the content creator team or whatever. This person should determine what the first version of this new gamemode is going to look like, what's going to be included and work with the dev team to implement the vision. DO NOT WASTE TIME DEVELOPING OUT YOUR CURRENT GAMEMODE WHILE THIS PROJECT IS HAPPENING. If you spend any development resource on a soon to be legacy gamemode because you're afraid no content means no people, I will slap you. But yea you need someone to lead and manage the project and facilitate the development process. The industry term for this person is a Product Owner/Product Manager, I'm familiar with the process bc its what I do lul. I certainly don't have time to deal with all of that, but I would be happy to help guide ya'll through this process at a consultant rate of $175/hour. (lmao nah I'll do it for free cuz I'm that nice).

So there's your opportunity to actually do something interesting with some sense of direction. Ya'll down?

Also lmfao, check out my post from 2017, THREE YEARS AGO that complained about the direction, lack of leadership and terrible decisions being made. I gave steps to fix it, it had a huge amount of support but never happened. Will likely happen with the above suggestion the same way. It's doomed, rip.

Ya'll really got me fked up out here. I think the next step if this doesn't work is to just watch ya'll slide into oblivion and make some kettle corn.

Saying to make a whole new game mode is unrealistic, do you understand how hard that is? For reference, one of my friends has been working 9-5 making his own game mode, and it took him a year and a half to finish, and it's not nearly as tangled with features and minor details as this server. Telling the dev team that they need to throw out a of their work and effort and start anew is possibly the worst thing you could ever do, it shows a disdain for the work that anybody who has tried to work on a system with this accursed engine and game has done.

@Montyfatcat

*facepalm*

I never said start from scratch, I said cut the excess bullshit content and systems that bring no value or entertainment. Also, tough shit. Things get developed and then need to be reworked or thrown out completely. It's the name of the game. You know what is actually unrealistic, is to continue piling shit on top of shit and useless content on top of useless content. Your shit-pile is going to come collapsing down at some point and the architecture will implode. God bless Faustie, Internet, Goigle, and all the developers for their hard work - but this is what needs to happen.

Start by cutting the rules on the current server and go from there.

To answer your question, I do indeed know how difficult development is. I manage a team of software developers.

I'm starting to find the ignorance and lack of receptiveness to anything insufferable. I'm going to start heating up my kettle corn and will check back in a few years to see if ya'll are still here. I'm really trying not to be a dick but it's like talking to a brick wall. Someone on the staff team can hit me up on steam if you want my help. Other than that I'm outta here. Peace.

Rethinking the rules wouldn't be too hard and would have a massive impact. Making a better game mode will be much harder but it's definitely needed. Do we want developers to add more additions to a gamemode that's already struggling to cope?

Perhaps this should be made into a suggestion, we need the entire community to make input and vote on this otherwise it'll never happen.

To be fair, no matter how strongly its supported by the community, it's the team itself who needs to decide.

Revamping the rules and enforcement doctrine is the simplest method of solving LL's primary issues.

basically all of em :( this version of source was not optimized for that many verts. It's been the source of so many damn crashes.

It doesn't necessarily have to be additions. Reworking and refining existing systems can go a long way too.

We are taking a serious look at optimization and bloat. I don't want to overpromise so I will be vague, but we're working on something to mitigate FPS issues caused by the HUD.

I think the main problem is players are naturally inclined to follow a very linear path, you're either going to become a mafioso or a veteran cop. Some more experienced roleplayers take this further to develop an extensive and regular group to bring like-minded people together, but it usually follows the same theme.

I totally agree that to some point Limelight is boring when you don't have the connections / friendships some of us do and have held for years. Which is exactly the experience that new players get when they join.

When I first re-joined LL after a very long hiatus, I experienced a similar sort of thing when I couldn't find any of the oldies or didn't know what to do besides be a cop or grow weed. Which obviously got boring fucking quickly, before promptly leaving and coming back to realise that it wasn't CityRP grind I enjoyed at all... It was everything I did with other people.

tl;dr LL is dead ting without friends

Another thought I just had is that it feels so wasted we have some of the most talented people in the GMod community based here, I mean we have things that would put the top communities to shame like an API and Git integration.

But basically nobody to share it with. It's a relatively professional and advanced "framework" of a community/company with minimal players because the bare essentials are wrong and need changing immediately or it faces death and so so much work going to waste.

For me personally it was when I got punished for a rule that didnt even exist and later got added as a rule (that you cant commit crimes as citizen). From that point on more and more rules got added.

And the fact that there got more useless stuff added so the server is today for me way too laggy to play on once there are more than 10 players

If you'd have taken the time to play on a few DarkRP servers, namely FL (the server that runs most similar to us as per the gamemode), then you'd understand it's not actually as bad as you are thinking it to be. The players are still the same as they are on LimeLight.

Unless of course you can come up with a more feasable option to widen the word of LimeLight Gaming, and bring new players to the community?

If you can't prepare to make a small sacrifice to enter a new category on the GMOD server listing, nor come up with a way to help fix the issue, then you're dooming this community.

FL is in the CityRP category (atleast it was the last time I took a look) and yeah I agree, on some DarkRP servers there can be great RP (ofc, not on those with these wacky unrealistic playermodels and addons) and because there are less limitations and less fun braking players it can be even more fun RPing there.

You're still far in the past then bud, the FL servers have been in the DarkRP category for the last 2 months +
