I disagree with this, from what i've seen on the S&Box discord it seems they're trying to keep it somewhat similar to Garry's Mod by including pre-made gamemodes such as a sandbox gamemode. This sandbox gamemode can be used as a base just like how it's currently done to build CityRP. They've also taken a lot of complexity out of the engine to make it easier for people to make stuff. I think it's really promising, especially the potential for actual city-sized maps (they ported the entire GTA-SA map as a demo).

The only big difference is the shift from Lua to C#, which can be learned as there's a ton of resources available. They've even released some samples gamemode for people to take a look at how it will work.

@PolluxSandbox is not a game. It is an extension of UE4 that creates an easier environment to develop "gamemodes"/"games"(based off of GMod). What you are saying is correct that there is going to be made premade gamemodes, but it is just that premade gamemodes. Sandbox itself is not a game. They are doing this for an upgraded Garry's Mod, but they are really pushing the player base to create all the fun like how Garry's Mod is right now. They are not stressing about making another standalone Garry's Mod.

According to some people on the S&Box development discord, it is a game, but it started as an extension for UE4. They changed it to a game later because they didn't want to start the Garry's Mod 2 hype train too early. I don't know anything I guess. I am very confused at this point. Might as well just wait for it to be released to find out.

You may very well be right about it's usage, as I said I'm sure it will be useful in someway once it's actually in a more finished and refined state, but I don't see that happening within a few years at least.

All programming languages have plenty of resources on the net, but C# is miles apart from LUA.
Just because someone can hack together a script in LUA doesn't mean they'd make a good C# programmer, and it's certainly not something you learn in a few days as you do with LUA.

I reiterate, I'm sure there will be plenty of interesting things done with it in the future, but as of right now (2019) I don't see it being a viable candidate for quite a while.

According to their Development Discord, in-development pictures as well as blog posts, S&Box is a game that you can mod as well as make addons for, make game modes for or simply play in it. Though if anyone could get a direct confirmation from the devs about it being a game or a tool, would be appreciated.

Edit:

As you can see, you are able to join other players on servers, which I do not see the reason for if it was only a development tool.

Like I said though, would be cool if we could get a clarification from a dev.

S&Box would be an awesome game to get into by the looks of it, but I would much rather wait until I have it in front of me before I make a judgement as to whether it'd be a good move. For all we know, it could flop. I know it's unlikely, but it's still a possibility nonetheless.

As far as a FiveM server, I think it would be cool, but I don't think it will be much of a success. I could be wrong, but I think Limelight would need a bigger staff/development team to up keep a Garry's Mod server (which is hard enough these days) and a FiveM server (which is just a bitch).

I am 100% agreeing that Limelight needs to expand their horizon, but I don't think now would be a good option. Unless the development team can expand, I don't see anything new (outside of GMOD) coming from Limelight any time soon.

From the discussion on this thread, S&Box (game or not) seems like a very viable option for the far future. Because remember, Limelight has to wait for S&Box to come out, and or wait for a development kit to come out, so they can start planning properly. Then, the first development stage which would get a basic implementation done. Next, tons of testing and revisions to the existing work. After that, you have another stage of development and testing to add more features. Finally, you can release it. Consequently, all of these steps take months of full time development, so I still don't see this coming out anytime soon even after the release of S&Box.

Absolutely agreed. Besides, it'd take some time to get adjusted from LUA to C#. Maybe we'll even need to hire new devs.

I see no issue in at least trying it out. There is quite an amount of people playing FiveM who are a part of L².

Personally, I do not think that spreading our territory is a wise move whilst our homeland is in turmoil.
Look at what happened to Alexander the Great.

In laymen's terms: We should only start working on new projects after our main focus, the CityRP game mode is stable.

So... never?

You would be correct. Never would basically be the case if making the gamemode as stable and efficient as possible was the case. I don't think that should be Limelight's goal. I think LL should move some development time to working on a minigame server which was mentioned earlier.

Though I also advise against looking too much into S&Box before it actually comes out, we shouldn't forget that from what we can gather from blog posts and such, the main focus of S&Box is to be a developer's wet dream from being able to import just about anything from any engine, to adding innovative industry changing mechanics such as live coding.

Yes, it will be a long time to convert the gamemode (or make its own iterarion) on S&Box, but I think that it will 100% pay off in the end and the fact is that if these aforementioned promised features are going to be implemented, our developers will get to use state-of-the-art tools to make sure they grant our user base an industry-leading experience.

Basically another discussion of this:
https://limelightgaming.net/forums/thread-15408.html

I've always back another server in LL and have always offered full support but anytime someone mentions another gmod server it seems the administration team, or the higher anyway, run into a hidey hole and avoid it.

IMO, another gmod server would be brilliant because it can bring more light to the community, to the gamemode itself and potentially have new players join that may not have thought about trying RP before which would be massively beneficial.

A lot of people have mentioned Jailbreak, despite my love for Jailbreak and having over 1000 hours between servers, it is not ideal for the community. If we are going to be making another server it has to be done on a stable gamemode, not a gamemode that struggles to get the same number of players across all servers as this one server on a weekend. Sadly Jailbreak is dying out and not an ideal place to start which is very unfortunate. Something such as TTT, Deathrun would be very ideal as if you have just a few players on the server, it is easy to then gain new people and quickly build a minigames side to the community.

FiveM, is not the way forward for now. If we cannot keep ourselves alive on gmod, we are going to struggle on a completely new game which we don't have as much knowledge of and which could cause issues for the community and the business.
