I got it in December 2015, and I should be getting a PC this year.

Yeah, if it starts to lag me out again, then I'll do that. But at the moment, it's not really doing anything other than being at 100%

Next time the issue occur, open the Task Manager and go into processes. Then sort the processes by disk usage and tell us what processes that are on the top and how much disk they use.

You could also try to run a disk diagnostic with any disk diagnostic software to see if your disk have reached it's lifespan.

I would also not really call a 8 months old Windows installation old. I've been running my Windows installation for over a year without any bigger problems and I can ensure that it will run for a few more months or years. But I guess it all comes down on how well you take care of your computer.

Do what @Jompe said to do.

Before you read all this, make sure your computer has a USB 3.0 slot, otherwise this is not as useful, but still works better. You can find this out by refering to your manufacture's book about your computer, or searching your computer online.

As a last resort get an external SSD Drive. I would get this one from newegg: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...6820147511 or from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-T3-Portab...+ssd+drive. It's a 250GB SSD by Samsung. An SSD will greatly improve your read and write time.
 What does this mean?
Programs will load faster, downloading will take less time, and has a longer lifespan than HDD Drives. I'm not gonna make this a tech lesson. Let's just say it will work a lot better, and allow many more programs to use to the disk at the same time. The biggest downfall is the price.
What do I store on it:
I would store your games and programs that you use often on it. Because it is external, I would not trust putting your OS on there. Also, if you choose to follow this, make sure to keep a browser installed on your regular HDD Drive.

Tutorials can be found all across google and youtube, on how to use your new SSD Drive.

PM me if you have any more questions.

When I get to my laptop, I'll try that. I guess I should just take a screenshot of it?

Alright, thank you! I'm not sure whether I'll buy an external hard drive, due to the fact that I'm getting getting a PC in December. But, if it ruins my laptop, then I will Big Grin

You could also try to defrag your HDD which should make it run better.

Isn't the OS the first thing you would put on an SSD?
It would decrease your boot times and would overall make it run a lot faster. I also like to keep my games on a HDD because of all the space it takes on the SSD.

Something that's good to know is that SSDs often have a lot shorter lifespan than a normal HDD and you will most likely run out of storage if you don't choose one with more than 250GB storage.

My SSD recommendations from my own experience:

If you want to spend more money on storage:
Buy a SSD with more than 250GB storage. It will overall make your computer run faster and you should have enough with space depending on how much games and files you have.

If you don't want to spend that much on storage but still want an SSD:
Buy a SSHD. A SSHD is a mix between a HDD and a SSD, which is a HDD but it has a small amount (Often around 8GB) of SSD storage which you can store your OS in. This will give you a lot of storage to store all your games and files in but it will still make your OS boot and run a lot faster.

I would never, EVER recommend putting your OS on an external drive of any kind. External drives are more prone to being damaged/corrupted than a drive that is sitting in a computer.

I think you misunderstood lifespan. I was using 'lifespan' as how long the drive will last. HDD drives have moving parts, that said, if it is dropped parts can be broken. SSD drives use flash memory with 0 moving parts. If it is dropped it has a greater chance of surviving than that HDD drive.

Only if you buy an internal, I would get more than 250GB, for the fact that it is safer.

Buy a SSHD. A SSHD is a mix between a HDD and a SSD, which is a HDD but it has a small amount (Often around 8GB) of SSD storage which you can store your OS in. This will give you a lot of storage to store all your games and files in but it will still make your OS boot and run a lot faster.
SSHD doesn't give enough capacity to put all your games on your flash memory storage. 8GB is a little amount. Here, we are looking for decreasing the boot and loading time for GMod. Not your whole comuter, although an SSD would greatly improve your overall system and programs.

That may indeed be true. But if you lookup the technology that a SSD uses, you'll find out that a SSD has a limited number of writes to the SSD.

As said, a SSHD would ONLY be to improve your system's boot time. This could be a cheaper alternative than buying a SSD if you don't want to spend money on one. The 8GB on the SSHD would be enough to store most operating systems on and would be a perfect cheaper alternative.

He has a laptop. An external is much easier to use on a laptop, then going through the trouble of duplicating your computer's storage and replacing the HDD drive to an SSD drive or an SSHD drive. A Desktop computer is much easier to upgrade. You don't even know if the laptop is up-gradable. And here stands my point. An external drive is much easier to use for a laptop. Also if he chooses to upgrade to a desktop PC than moving already fairly used data, will be much easier.

My bad. Didn't think of that he had a laptop. But if your laptop is upgradeable you could try to buy a internal HDD/SSD/SSHD. Some laptops have screws on the bottom that you can remove to replace the storage quite easily.

Do note that by opening up your laptop some manufacturers will void your warranty for that.

Do it at your own risk.

Sorry for not replying to the thread, I kept meaning to but then forgot. It seems to have fixed itself, but if it starts again I will make sure to do everything mentioned in this thread again.

Thank you to everyone that replied!
