Believe I became a donor on my 18th birthday.

Chose to opt out of donating eyes and brain however, something I just don't like the idea of around them.

Rule Britannia and that.

Once I turn 18, I will be registering myself. Since I don't see any reason I may be brain dead in the upcoming years, I will avoid this conversation with my parents.

Regarding religions, I have a small part of me that thinks Jehovas Witnesses are against it. I think I read it somewhere.

I think that only has to do with giving blood and what not. For instance a Jehovas Witness would not be given blood during surgery or in the ER.

Are you a registered organ donor: Yes I am, when I took my driving permit test I signed up as an Organ Donator.

Why/Why not: If I can die to save another human being from joining me in death, why not? I won't be needing em anymore.

See if you can donate some of your organs to science instead.

A really thoughtful post, probably caught the eye of every poor player on LL. After reading this and watching the video I think I will be signing up to the organ donors list as soon as I turn 18.  Great idea, man. Thanks for opening my eyes on this massively critical topic.

Yes; I became an organ donor as soon as I filled out the paperwork for my driver's license.

Why: if I'm involved in some sort of tragic incident which results in my death, I'm not going to need anything from my own body afterwords, so why not use it to save someone's life. The easiest choice I ever made was signing up to be an organ donor, and I'll never regret my decision.

I'm pretty sure I signed up to be an organ donor when I got my license a few years ago, but on further checking I don't have a card or anything like that so wasn't sure; I just signed up again now. This is why I strongly support the UK - and any other governments - swapping to an opt-out system, rather than the current opt-in one. There are probably a great many people who support the principle of organ donation but who never got around to being registered, or thought they had a long time yet until they die. Even people who are on the fence about it are less likely to opt-out. I'm fully supportive of organ donation - my EPQ project was even regarding a serious lack of organ donations and the potential ways to tackle this (more on this below) - but I fell into the former class, and had not gotten around to it.

For those who are interested: in my project I spoke about how various factors, both personal and political, led to a severe shortage of donations in the UK. One of these was the opt-out system. Being myself though, I had to take a look into the future of organ donation: I discussed the possibility of growing new tissue and organs, and replacing damaged organs with advanced prosthetic counterparts where possible. This was about four years ago; had I done the project now I'd have had so much more to talk about: 3D printing of organs and biological tissue and further advancements in prosthetic technology. It's a really interesting field and some 'sci-fi' things really aren't that far off.

That said, you shouldn't hold off from registering as a donor just because the future is promising. There will likely always be a need for real, human organs, so please, register to donate.

Saw the video earlier, it really touched me. Thanks to this thread i've just signed up as an organ donor. I thought of it for a split second and then thought:
Why not? Just imagine if you all of the sudden need an organ you would really appreciate a person giving you it.
So why not become a person giving another person a chance to live his/her normal life again.
And after you're dead you're not going to need it anymore so why not donate it.

@Faustie I've been joking a bit about being able to just go to Kinko's 20 years from now and just copy a heart if my son will need a transplant then. Who knows what kind of medical advancements there will be then. His Glenn procedure was brand new when they did it and I've heard that there is now a new better way a year later.

But overall I agree that the key in all this is from donators. If not for transplants then for science. No research can be done without a source.
