Established on May 23, 1845, the NYPD is one of the oldest police departments in the United States, and is the largest. The current Commissioner is Richard D. Brower, who also concurrently holds the rank of Chief of Department.

The Patrol Services Bureau is the largest and most visible bureau in the NYPD, overseeing the majority of the department's uniformed officers on patrol and attending the majority of emergency calls for service. New officers in the department either start in this bureau or the Transportation Bureau.

The Detective Bureau is responsible for the prevention, detection and investigation of crime, and its work often complements the work of police officers assigned to the precincts. Detectives will attend incidents where there is a need for an investigation, or where they are required to back up their uniformed colleagues.

The Transportation Bureau is responsible for the safety and security of motorists, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists on New York City's streets and highways, as well as the security of the 5.6 million people who use the city's transport systems every day. It manages traffic control, parking and towing throughout the city, and also has an elite unit of Highway Patrolmen who take primary responsibility for pursuits, accident investigation and reducing vehicle crime.

The Special Operations Bureau was created to enhance the department's coordinated response to major events and incidents that require specifically trained and equipped personnel. It is responsible for the department's Emergency Service Unit, which handles tactical and rescue situations, the Strategic Response Group, which is a group of regular officers with advanced tactical training that can be called upon for major events or incidents, as well as the department's Air and Marine units.

The Internal Affairs Bureau (IAB) detects, investigates, and brings to justice New York City police officers and civilians, as well as civilians and police officers of other agencies operating in New York City, who engage in misconduct and corruption.

The NYPD Training Bureau provides recruits, uniformed officers, and civilians with academic, tactical and technological training.

The Administration & Support Bureau was formed by the merger of the Legal Matters, Support Services, Public Information, Risk Management, Personnel and Employee Relations Bureaus and handles all matters related to administration, support, human resources and legal. The Medical Division and Communications Centre are also part of this division.

Police Officers are the backbone of the NYPD, responsible for attending calls for service, investigating and detecting crime, making arrests and issuing tickets to bring justice to criminals both big and small. You will receive world-class training and equipment, and will start your career off as a patrol officer in either the Patrol Services or Transportation Bureau and, once you have completed your probation, will have the opportunity to specialise in a number of career specialisms such as Detective, Highway Patrol, ESU, etc. 

$41,493 p/a - Increasing to a maximum of $47,874

Traffic Enforcement Agents are responsible for enforcing traffic and safety laws throughout New York's road and transportation system. They are empowered to issue tickets and directions to traffic, as well as deal with minor traffic violations, and are also trained and empowered to operate tow trucks. 

Dispatcher 

Dispatchers answer 911 calls, assign police resources, and direct officers to incidents and provide them with assistance by radio. 

Crime Scene Investigator

Civilian Investigators attend crime scenes and assist our detectives with processing them with advanced forensics knowledge.

Emergency Medical Technician

The Department staffs a number of EMTs to assist our medical unit with its task of looking after our officers and close family, as well as assisting our ESU with medical tasks.

Detective-Investigators are the world's greatest detectives. They work as part of either the Detective Bureau or the Internal Affairs Bureau to detect, investigate and prevent crimes. This position represents the first rung on the "Investigative" career ladder

Detective-Specialist is a unique role in the NYPD, granted to specialist, uniformed officers who work in units like the Emergency Service Unit or uniformed officers who have distinguished themselves beyond the normal Police Officer title and benefits. They carry the same authority and benefits as regular Detectives, however for the most part do not carry out investigative duties. This position represents the first rung on the "Specialist" career ladder

NYPD Highway Patrolmen are the department's elite traffic officers. They work under the Transportation Bureau to help keep the city's roads flowing, reduce and investigate road crime, safely bring police pursuits to an end, and investigate road traffic collisions throughout their area. This position can represent the first rung on the "Specialist" career ladder

$84,248 p/a rising to a maximum of $106,830 p/a 

Police Sergeants are the department's supervisors. They are responsible for overseeing junior officers and detectives, as well as looking after their team's training and welfare needs in tandem with a Lieutenant. Prospective Sergeants must take the Sergeant's exam and pass a board interview in order to qualify for Sergeant. This position represents the first rung on the "Supervisory" career ladder.

$107,830 p/a +

Police Lieutenants are the first management rank in the NYPD, and as such are permitted to wear white shirts. These are highly experienced and promising officers who have previously been Sergeants, and have also passed the Lieutenant's Exam and interview. They work mainly in a supervisory and line management role, managing a shift of officers. This position represents a step-up on the "Supervisory" career ladder and further management ranks are promoted based on merit. 

NYPD is currently recruiting for all roles. 

Expected Wait Time: Approx 2 days

Prospective officers will be invited to a formal interview if their application is satisfactory, and will sit a basic police exam and must pass a fitness and medical evaluation. If successful, new recruits in the NYPD will be trained at our new training facility in Southside, Queens, before being assigned to a precinct in the Patrol Services Bureau or the Transportation Bureau as a patrol officer.
