I might be wrong here, but if iirc gmod utilises only one CPU core, the issue with that is no matter what you upgrade to, you are going to see a very slight change to fps, depending how power each core is.

It is not really worth upgrading only so you can play on LL with more FPS.

For me, I was asking in general, not just LL.

Gmod does not utilize multicore, as such Intel CPUs do outperform AMD CPUs. But don't let this influence your decision as a whole because AMD more than faces up to intel in terms of performance and especially value for money, with their multicore performance for other games and workloads. Honestly if you're only looking to upgrade because of gmod/LL, don't bother. Won't get you anywhere.

I have a Ryzen 1600x and a 1060 6GB, 16GB of RAM and an SSD and I can happily get 150+ FPS in any game with high/ultra settings, but get 25fps on LL.

AMD is shit. I've had one AMD cpu so far and I will never ever touch one again.

I run Gmod on my Hard Drive and Windows on my SSD because I do a lot more general use of my laptop than I do gaming, so I prefer to have my operating system load faster than my games.

Back OT, I have an i7 7700HQ @ 2.8GHz, 8GB DDR4 RAM and a GTX 1060 , and usually need to run the "gmod_mcore_test 1" and "r_3dsky 0" commands to even dream of having 30+ FPS when there's 35+ players online. Hope that's contributed to your investigations.

Like it's been said previously, Gmod isn't very good at using modern hardware and utilising it efficiently. It's a very old game much like the engine, so upgrading loads just for Gmod is a bad idea unless you're also going to use the expensive new hardware for newer titles. If you're gonna fork out loads of money, you need a machine that's gonna be able to keep up with new titles coming out for the next few years. I'm confident my 1060 and 7700HQ will be able to handle most new titles for the foreseeable future on low-medium graphics (hopefully without sacrificing too much visually).

Good luck, nonetheless.
