So because i was really sick the first day and a half we didnt get everything done we wanted so I wrote a quick account of our trip. It's terribly written but hopefully it gives an idea of the event.

At about 10pm the night before we left I wondered if I’d make it through, I’d been sick twice that day after suspected food poisoning the last night, and although I myself felt fine I knew I would probably spend my time trying to regulate my food intake.

Time passed and I slept surprisingly well, I woke up as we’d agreed at 5am showered and loaded my car, an aged Volvo, with my bags and PC equipment. After an hour of shuttling round the other’s houses we were on the move towards Birmingham. I felt myself growing in excitement about the trip, we’d planned it months in advance, nailing down every detail of what we were going to do, but somehow I still never believed it would actually happen. All this shattered near Watford on the M1 when again I was sick whilst driving. Thankfully I was less than a mile from the services else I don’t know what I would have done, luckily it was the last time though. Eventually we arrived in the city, I’d made a hasty call to our Hotel explaining I’d “spilled coke on myself and needed an earlier check-in” (I didn’t really want to be picking up press credentials looking like I’d rolled out of a pub). None the less we arrived unpacked and I ate gently.

Going to an event like this is something I think any gamer should do in their lifetime. I’ve never stopped in my tracks to gape at something like I have walking into the LAN hall and seeing all those PCs row upon row which must have been over a thousand in total. The sheer size of the event alone made it worth my trip.

That night we hosted Vadar and his friend over at our Hotel (or ‘aparthotel’ apparently due to the kitchenette’ this for me was a big highlight for my trip, the LAN is fun and amazing with its scale but spending time with the people you value most I something I think Is priceless, sitting there laughing at my ineptitude at making toast in our toasted which, in a very un-rock and roll way, only went upto 7 is one of my stand out memories from our trip.

After a troubled night sleep we finally rocked up to i61 by near 12 and played for a few hours, joined by Vadar et al later on in the day. Half way through I helped a bloke who’d asked for someone mechanically minded on the i61 discord for help with his car (it was shagged btw) which I think is the beauty of the event, everyone is so friendly! Anyone and everyone is accepted here and I genuinely felt such a nice atmosphere from people and I can see why such a big community has sprung up around it. Even coming back we still were getting traffic updates via the discord about the M1 from people ahead of us.

MrCat then spent all night in a casino watching the big fight whilst me and Ramboman chilled in our Hotel. Again not that interesting but we shared a Koppaberg so at least I knew I was feeling a bit better by now.

By Sunday I was feeling genuinely sad our trip was nearly over, on the Friday I thought I couldn’t wait to get back, I was feeling terrible and was immensely tired. But by Sunday I was feeling so much more revived I only wish I’d been feeling better sooner, as there was so much more we could of done and will do next time.

So we drove back at 2 on Monday, with a vow to return next summer, but this time knowing how to make the most of the event.

I want to thank everyone who came to see me at i61 it was such a pleasure spending time with everyone. Especially to Marvin and the gang running ECR whilst I was away, we’ve got big plans for that which are coming soon and I hope to see more of you at the next Insomnia!
