Amazing effort by the pilots and flight attendants!

Thankfully the engine fire occurred before V1 speed; otherwise it could have been a different story...
Not that the aircraft can't fly on one engine (despite its weight and fuel laden tanks), it can, but fires can be rapidly spreading on aircraft.

I find it appalling that passengers took their cabin baggage. The plane's on fucking fire... some education is definitely needed here and in my opinion, action should be taken on those who did take their cabin bags.

Once again, congratulations to the staff onboard for their swift act. As said in the article, airline pilots train for this stuff regularly; especially British Airways.

Yeah, they did everything 'by the book'. Unfortunately the passengers weren't as bright as they should have been. None the less, it's a good thing they reacted ASAP.

Agree, they should be told not to touch their luggage during an evacuation during the period in which they are taught the breach position. Also, does anyone know the cause of the fire?

The engine will be taken apart and studied by the NTSB with input from Boeing and General Electric. They reckon the high pressure compressor spool in the engine may have broken. This could be because of a fatigue crack or even something hit the engine.

The aircraft was just over 16 years old, so I assume at some point it would have been fitted with brand new engines than the ones fitted on construction. It appears the aircraft, G-VIIO, has been written off

We'll see how the investigation turns out, but I suppose some airlines will want to check their GE-90 engines. Although this engine remains an incredibly reliable one powering most Boeing 777s.

Investigators found multiple breaches in the engine casing. They say engine parts flew out on to the runway.

Hopefully the same thing doesn't happen on my BA flight next week...
