Policemen secure evidences after an Iraqi man was shot dead by the police in Berlin

The savage assault in the west of the capital, Berlin, was carried out by Rafik Mohamad Yousef, an Iraqi man who was known to be involved in the city's extremist Islamist scene.

Berlin police said on Twitter: "He had been convicted of being a member of a terrorist association and of being involved in a plot to murder the Iraqi prime minister."

Police were called after reports that a man was waving a knife about on a street in the Spandau district.

The man seriously injured a female officer, stabbing her in the neck above her protective uniform, before another officer shot the suspect four times, killing him.

The officer, who was also struck in the kidney by a stray bullet, was rushed to A&E where she underwent emergency surgery but she is now stable in intensive care.

Paramedics tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Yousef but he died in an ambulance on his way to hospital.

The 41-year-old was handed an eight-year prison sentence by a court in Stuttgart in 2008 for membership of Ansar al-Islam, a radical Islamic group linked to al-Qaeda.

He was convicted along with two other Iraqis for plotting to kill the country's then-prime minister Ayad Allawi during a visit to Germany in 2004.

German authorities wanted to deport him after the trial concluded but were stopped by EU human rights rules (lol!!!!) as he could have faced the death penalty in his native Iraq.

Yousef was freed on bail but ordered to wear an electronic tag, which he removed before the attack.

Ansar al-Islam, formed in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, is believed to have been behind attacks on US and allied troops in Iraq.

It's happening boys, terrorists are infiltrating our countries and authorities would rather free than imprison them.
