LIGO Detects Gravitational Waves; Proves Einstein Right - TheSenDest - Feb 11, 2016 EDITED(2/11 @ 11:11 AMCST) Source Two massive black holes that have been circling each other for years finally decided to kiss and make up. Causing a widespread collision and merging of the two black holes that sent, literally, ripples through space and time. Since 2002, approximately 1000 scientists, $500 million dollars and Einstein's theory of relativity have finally paid off. Today in Washington, D.C. the scientists from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory announced they finally detected gravitational waves in space. Thus, validating Einstein's theory and automatically expanding spacetime science forever. Five months ago was when LIGO first detected the waves with their two $1 billion dollar (total) instruments located in Hanford, Washington and Livingston, Louisiana. ![]() LIGO's systems detected an oscillation that emerged at 35 cycles per second, or Hertz, and sped up to 250 Hz before disappearing 0.25 seconds later. According to Science Magazine, the delay lasted 0.007 seconds across both detectors and was perfect timing for a light-speed wave crossing both detectors. LIGO also stated that the wave, when it hit Earth, expanded and shrunk Earth by 1/100,000 nanometers. ![]() The LIGO facility in Livingston, Louisiana, has a twin in Hanford, Washington.
