Yes, you read that correctly. Kicking off their fourth aniversary lasting 10 days the guys at overkill merged the crate systems from TF2 and CS:GO into one, how nice right?
This means when you heist you can get safes, these safes needs to be drilled open, but not by a regular drill. No this drill requires you to pay 2 pounds(3$) to open. Once inside you get one special skin to put on your gun.
If that wasnt enough THESE COSMETIC ITEMS GIVES WEAPON BUFFS.
People hate it, especialy since Overkill 1. Said pre-PD2 they would NEVER add microtransactions and 2. They said everything in crimefest was supposed to be FREE to EVERYONE, as a reward for the playerbases struggle to finish abetrary tasks these last years.

Why does Valve get away with it but because it's Overkill everyone has pitchforks and torches at the ready?
Not trying to justify it, just saying that Valve has been doing this shit for ages and people praise CS:GO and spend stupid amounts of money on skins.

Valve's businessmodel is that cosmetic skins does not add any in game benefit to the person using it, they are COSMETIC and that only.
Overkill added weapon stats on the skins, so one skin gives +4 stabillity for example.

Valve just let's those who want to, make their guns prettier.
What overkill has done = pay 2 win.

If they want to add Downloadable Content (or DLCs) than just make PAYDAY 2 free to play than like what Dungeon Defenders 2 did during their early alpha test. Not hard.
