Material URL Tool - Markus - Feb 5, 2025

Title:
Material URL Tool

Description:
The Material URL Tool is a tool that lets players use any image with a URL
(that is on the whitelist) as a material for props. I propose that we add this tool to the server.

Why?:
This tool would be as - if not more - useful, as the Advanced Material  tool
suggested in my previous post. It would allow players to use any material they wish
that can be found online, such as posters, screenshots, or even custom car liveries they've created!

I believe this could also be put behind a 1 REP limit, similar to the sign.

Footnote:
I have consulted with @bimkx‍ and on first look any potential security issues could possibly be ironed out, similarly to the Sign we already have.

Thank you for your suggestion, Markus!

It will take a while for it to be reviewed by our staff-members.
Meanwhile, expect some nice feedback from our community.

We love getting creative with the builds.

The only way this can be successfully moderated is we had our own image hosting service which allows us to approve, delete images and only use our services.

Otherwise although it's a great asset, it opens Limelight to ToS breaches and similar issues.

We would need several things to be able to pull it off while preventing misuse.

- Tool specific blacklist and/or REP point tie in to combat misuse
-- This is the most possible moderation method. A misuse would mean a tool gun blacklist and that would mean 80% of gmod is out of reach.

- LL based approval or moderated image hosting system which is the only whitelisted host. Sadly many existing options could cause issues even if a whitelist is used. This would allow us to combat other misuses but this adds to the process.

We'll need to discuss this internally if it is viable in any way, I see the positives but also I am aware of the negatives and the headaches it could cause moderation wise. New tools that allow creativity to such degree always begin their life span with a flood of misuse, while we do have a general way to combat this, and staff can surely warn for such use but a blacklist alongside a REP requirement would definitely be necessary.

Please keep these in mind as this suggestion goes forward / if it goes forward.

The tool itself seems to have a few issues, judging by the recent comments.

I agree with the points you've raised.

Similar to the Sign, a REP count should be used to soft-limit the tool, as users with REP are more likely to be long-term players.
While this wouldn't prevent all misuse (and a tool-specific blacklist is certainly worth considering),
the safeguards currently in the code of our Signs have proven effective (after all, we do not see much NSFW images on them)
and thus could be implemented on this tool as well.

I hope we can find a way forward and that it can be turned into a safe and fun way for players to bring their own flavor into the game.

I don't see why the sign would be implemented but this couldn't

Given that you could likely use the same textures on cars.... this could open up some pretty exciting possibilities. I thinking custom car skins/details, larger billboards, more immersive signs etc. I do see the moderation issues it would bring though.if we could smehow ensure TOS compliamce im all for this tool.
