Are you using a bind to do this? If so the code that looks for movement, may only be used when you click the 'Use' button in the F1 menu. If this is the case, this could be an easy fix. If the code is already there for it, idk.

it was the exact same for me I would press use on my suit and I would walk and it would still equip
