RE: Limelight FiveM server? - Blazing - Jan 14, 2019 It's a completely different territory, from what I can see. They have one similarity in that both servers would be for RP, and the similarities end there. Started as DarkRP, they've got a bit of everything now and it's all managed terribly RE: Limelight FiveM server? - Markus - Jan 14, 2019 (Jan 14, 2019, 07:59 PM)Montyfatcat Wrote:(Jan 14, 2019, 07:29 PM)Gungranny Wrote:(Jan 14, 2019, 07:24 PM)Montyfatcat Wrote: You want another Zarp? So mehhhhhhhhhhhhhh No but without jokes. Seems fun but alot of work for them to go through. And I doubt they wanna risk it as it could pull players off of their gmod server. RE: Limelight FiveM server? - Project - Jan 15, 2019 Did I read TTT? RE: Limelight FiveM server? - Haamster - Jan 22, 2019 FiveM is... difficult. No, not to manage or script for, but as a business concept. Limelight is currently built up as a for-profit business, which FiveM has quite a problem with. An extract from FiveM's ToS here: Quote:• Don’t try to make money off FiveM. Not even your game services. Covering costs incurred from third parties (server rent, product licensing, …) is fine, however any additional profit (including ‘donations’ other than to cover immediate costs) is not. For this reason, FiveM would not be an optimal platform for Limelight. Furthermore, FiveM itself is a rather unstable platform, basically built on hacks and is fully reliant on the FiveM dev team to function at all. They could at any time revoke your license for example, which they have done at several points in the past, most notably when they started refusing server hosts except those willing to give the FiveM team a cut of their action. Very shady business practices in general. Not to mention that setting up FiveM on the client-side is quite a bit more complex than it has to be and is very reliant on a lot of third party platforms (just to install FiveM you need to login to social club). This is not a very good platform to rely on when you're trying to run a business. Game wise I do think that CityRP could be great fun on the Rage engine though, I just don't think it would be an especially good fit business wise (operating in legal grey areas rarely is.) Ending on a more positive note though, I do hope that we see some refreshing scenery for the RP scene in the somewhat near future as there has yet to really be any platforms taking off since GMod took over the HL2RP scene in the mid/late 00's. This means that gmod has been one of the major RP (among other) platforms for over a decade. The main reason for this is it's extreme flexibility. If you can imagine it in a game, it can most likely be done in GMod. The main problem with GMod starting to show it's age is the ever ageing source engine (just be glad we're not on goldsrc). With Source2 nowhere in sight for public use as of yet, gmod having gone through more changes than most any other game for such a long time, problems tend to creep up and some are not easily fixable without major overhauls from the ground up, at which point a re-make is more cost effective, like adding (working) 64-bit support. Enough ranting, the point is that I'm sure many people would be happy to try out a new game, a new engine, a new platform, or really anything that could facilitate a multi-faceted customisable RP environment, but there just aren't any viable alternatives that have matured yet, and taking a leap of faith has proven to not be the way to go for any RP projects worth their salt, just look at all the failures that were supposed to "revolutionize RP" in just a few short years.
Personally I'm not having as high hopes for S&Box as some others seem to have, mostly because 1. It is NOT a game. Don't confuse it with GMod. Yes, you can most likely do very similar things to GMod, but it is a not a moddable game, it is a game engine tool. The skillset to work with the two are worlds apart and anyone who tells you otherwise probably considers themselves superb programmers for knowing HTML. 2. Even if the current skill sets could be used somehow, it would take years upon years to create something even close to what exists today for GMod. And that's not even counting the infancy bugs and problems that will pop-up along the way. Most likely the people who were/are hyped for S&Box will have moved on with their lives once it's in a somewhat stable state, and I'm sure that the next/current generation will enjoy it, but I highly doubt that the people I personally played with growing up are going to be there for it's release. RE: Limelight FiveM server? - Barkles - Jan 22, 2019 *googles FiveM* Yes I think it looks interesting the only problem being the ease in which you can have your rockstar account banned if you don't know what you're doing lol RE: Limelight FiveM server? - Oneshott - Jan 22, 2019 I also think a lot of people took this post as "Replacing" city RP. I don't think that was the goal of anyone who said FiveM could be cool. I think at least, that all of those that think FiveM could be interesting, would not want to see Gmod City RP just go away because of it. RE: Limelight FiveM server? - Night - Jan 22, 2019 iirc, the tools made to make FiveM a thing aren't really encouraged by the makers of GTA, presenting potential copyright issues. Seeing how we're a registered company, we want to try and steer clear from any potential copyright issues, not throw ourselves right into it. That aside, FiveM seems interesting but the 32 player slots concern me, seeing how we hit 50+ on weekends sometimes. The Dev-Team of FiveM is currently working on a better system to allow more player slots (64, up to 100 as in custom GTA-RP servers) |
