Lord Octagon's solution partially helped my solution, however, when loading into the server and loading content from the map the whole game freezes and I have to force stop it. Any solutions to this?

How long is the game freezing for?
This is completely normal for Garry's Mod, some servers just take a lot more time than others.
The way Garry's Mod is set up, it is checking all the Lua files and downloading any new ones. Since this is a direct transfer from the server (and there is encryption involved), this can take a bit of time. In the case of Limelight, joining on some PCs can take about 5 - 15 minutes, during which time your PC will appear to be frozen. This is just because there are a huge amount of Lua files on Limelight - more than any other server you're likely to encounter.

I'd recommend running in windowed mode at a resolution slightly lower than your native resolution. (go to Options -> Video)
This will let you use your PC while the game loads (simply press alt + tab to free your mouse). You can also open task manager (if you are on Windows 10, hit the more details button if you are in the condensed view) and if Garry's Mod's memory usage is not increasing after 20-30 minutes (only way to be sure), I'd recommend closing the game and then coming back here for more help.
