Until now, food was only a simple inventory item that replenished hunger. There were never many roleplay opportunities with it. With this latest update, new roleplay opportunities have been opened up.
Placing food
By using the 'place' button in your inventory, or the standard inventory command (/inventory foodname place #), you can place down food for yourself or others to eat. Any food placed down will have a slight golden halo when looking at it so it can be distinguished from normal props. All you then have to do is press E to eat the food. If it's alcoholic, you may become drunk; otherwise, your hunger stat will replenish as usual.
Note: You can still eat food normally from the inventory.
Roleplay opportunities
By placing food, you can now create Corleone dinner parties, homeless feeding stations, prepare meals for the President, and so on. This isn't really a gameplay alteration, just a way to improve passive roleplay.
Poison
It's now possible to find poison, somewhere in the map. This can be used to sneakily poison food, for example, the President's or Corleone Don's evening meal. Be careful though; while the poison is usually colourless and odorless, when placing it it'll be visible for a second or two.
Poison will soon have some additional uses.
Rotting food
If food is left out for too long, it may rot. You can then collect it. While this doesn't yet have a purpose, it's likely that it'll soon be used as fishing bait and as a way to improve the effectiveness of pots.

Oh... My...
How exactly will this affect the individual?
Can we maybe also have some kind of antidote or sniffing tool of some description?
Currently poison just kills someone after a certain amount of time. There are planned updates that will expand upon this and add ways to counter it, enhance it, and detect it.
Is poison shown in the logs or could someone for example randomly leave poisoned food around in public?
Uh, not because I'd do that or anything c:

Id assume it is shown in the logs.
Though who walks around eating any bits of food they find on the road, in the forest, or on a plate sitting under a cage being percariously held up by a stick with a string attached to it.

If you let me try this out I can guarantee that someone will eat it eventually
