Are those county (or I guess parish) jails or actual prisons for the state of Louisiana? There’s a big difference in the behaviors of the inmates. People in county jails seem to be more riled up. Where I work, the inmates have anywhere from around 10 years to life. They’ve been incarcerated for a while so a lot of them have calmed down.

Nah these are jails. High suicide rates and aggression, but also the only ones that would offer a part time position. I’d rather work at GameStop and get robber then have to work in those hellish conditions. Not to mention Louisiana’s law isn’t...very.....uh...non-corrupt.
Is it anything like the movies/tv shows?

I honestly don't watch any prison based shows but I know they blow stuff way out of proportion. There aren't fights every 10 minutes or people trying to escape. The majority of my job consists of feeding them, make sure they have water, and making sure they're not having a seizure or hanging in their cell. It all depends on the day. Some days that is all I'll do, just get what I need to get done, such as showers, chow, rec, mail, and water. Some days can get fucking insane. We've had staff assaults, use of forces, 5 man cell extraction teams, seizures, hangings, and basically anything else that can go wrong. That is not that often though. Prison life is boring compared to TV shows and movies.
Are you permitted to speak to the inmates? In a way that is not in the performance of your job (more specifically are you able to just kinda shoot the breeze with them)?

Weirdest story from work (other than the aforementioned contraband find)?

Yes, but no. We can talk to them, but to a certain point. If you spend too much time talking to a certain inmate, to your coworkers and supervisors it looks like you’re attempting to establish a relationship. As long as you’re not spending an extended period of time with a select few inmates, it’s alright. I usually have general conversations like “hey Garcia, nice weather eh? Too bad you can’t go out and feel it for yourself” I do not talk about my personal life. When they ask anything personal I lie (yes thats allowed), such as my age, where I go to school, relationship status, etc. Also, if I can tell they’re going through a rough time I’ll try and help them out. My supervisor got a call from a medical examiner to tell that an inmate’s mother died and I was with them when my sgt broke the news. I make sure to check up on him whenever I work on his block.

I can’t think of the weirdest story off the top of my head but here is my most crazy *so far*.
We have a couple different ways that we feed chow in high security. We were doing dayroom chow this day, which is where we strip search the inmates in their cell and let them out to go down stairs to the dayroom, where around 30 can sit in there at a time. We had sent around 20 inmates down and my Sergeant broadcasts over the radio that there is a fight in my dayroom downstairs, so I secure the door of the inmate that I was in the process of strip searching and run downstairs with the 2 or 3 more correctional officers with me. Keep in mind, my Sergeant who was downstairs has both his carry-on-person, 5 ounces of OC spray, and a second 20 ounce can used specifically for fights. So when I get down stairs, I see about 18 inmates getting out of the dayroom, and I order them to lay down on the floor, to at least somewhat control them and show that they are non-combative. There are 2 white guys left in the dayroom going at it. My sarge has already emptied his COP 5 ounce can of gas, so I could smell it a little in the air, but the offenders were still fighting so he used the whole 20 ounce can on them. Here’s the shitty part, they were fighting under a fan that was mounted on the wall and facing our way. A lot of the gas got on the inmates, and they felt it real quick, but a lot blew right back at us so we were choking just as hard as they were. The inmates broke up and one came outside so I could cuff him. I was fucked from the gas, I could hardly breathe, or see, I was coughing up a storm, and i had snot running down my face. I managed to cuff the first guy and hand him off to another officer so he could be taken to the infirmary. More officers showed up with gas masks, but didn't bring me one so I was still coughing and choking and snotting. We closed the dayroom door with the second inmate inside and gave him commands to come to the door so we could cuff him through a hole in it. This guy could not see a thing, so I was having to tell him "come back to the sound of my voice" and shit like in a felony traffic stop. Eventually he got to the door and he was cuffed. I got him out and did have any time to decontaminate from the gas. I had to take him straight to the infirmary, where he was crying and screaming the whole time like a pussy. He just had a busted up nose from the fight, so he was cleared and I brought him back to the wing. This was the most pussy fight I've ever seen. Their punches were horrible. They were fighting because tweedle dumbass #1 (the one I brought to the infirmary) was in the Aryan Brotherhood, and had a swastika tatood on his face, and tweedle dumbass #2 didn't like that. Shit like this is a lot of paperwork, and the gas sucks ass, but I live for that shit. The rush of adrenaline that I get when I hear the call on the radio and as I'm running to it is like no other.
How long have you worked in corrections and have you ever been beat up by an inmate or attacked?

In December 2018 I started the 4 week long academy, 6 days a week 13 hours a day. Then did my on the job training at my assigned unit from January until about March. My original assignment was working visitation, where family members can come and visit the inmates. During the summer I switched to high security where I work now. I’m coming up on a year working there.
I personally have never gotten in a physical fight with an inmate, but have had coworkers beat up. They got beat up because of their negligence though. One was a small female who had a bag of chips in her hands, and was walking really close behind an inmate, not paying attention to her surrounding. The inmate turned around and started beating the shit out of her. Luckily some other inmates broke up the fight.
The second one was very similar. An officer I personally work with wrote up some low custody inmates for an offense. The 2 inmates found him later, and the officer let his guard down and let them surround him. They beat him up but it was in plain view of a bunch of officers, so it was broken up quick.
If you stay on your toes and don’t let the inmates outsmart you, you’ll be alright.

Thinkin of u dan <3
We don't house any inmates that have special needs, but we do have some psych patients who are absolutely nutz. One that was on my block for a while used to shit in a piece of paper and smear it everywhere. On the walls, on himself, everywhere. Luckily I didn't have to clean it up, just made my SSIs (support service inmates, basically assigned janitors) clean it. Also had another guy who swallowed some screws, and when we was in the hospital he got a hold of a TV remote and swallowed the batteries from it. He was coughing and shitting up blood all the time. He has HIV too so i was fucking scared i was gonna get infected. He wasn't special needs though, just a fuckin retard.

love u sovie <3

is that blonde girl single

edit: we do have some transgender inmates, if you wanna call them special needs xd
Boy have I got a doozie for y’all, gotta wait until the investigation is over
