Hostage Situation near Cologne main train station

A hostage situation broke out near the main railway station in Cologne, German police confirmed, while local media say there is heavy presence of officers armed with submachine guns.

"We assume that a hostage has been taken, either at McDonald's or at a nearby pharmacy," a police spokeswoman told Reuters.
"A woman is probably being held but we don't have any further details," she added.

Police have cordoned off the entire area. Meanwhile, Bild reported that a counter-terrorism rapid response team are on their way to the scene.

The suspect seems to be armed, but his identity is yet to be established, police said. It is unknown at this stage if the perpetrator has any terrorist connections. Nevertheless, the police counter-terrorism team are gearing up for the possible hostage rescue, local media said.

Update: Authorities said the perpetrator sustained life-threatening injuries and emergency personnel were trying to revive him with CPR. It wasn't immediately clear how he sustained the injuries.
Apparently the suspect is a supporter of the so called "Islamic State" (IS).

Glad the Hostage could be saved with minor injuries. Nice job by the SWAT Team.

And no, this doesn't happen on a daily basis.

Have you read that somewhere? Because if it was a daily occurrence, the world would be up in arms.

There was only one major IS attack in Germany.

2-3 attacks which the IS "claims" for themselves. Often just psychopathic people.

I mean major or not, people are getting injured either way

I think you misread '2-3 attacks last 2 years' with 'every day'.
