Chinese involvement in the sea has escalated due to US presence, which claims that the area is International Waters, meanwhile the Chinese government claims that it is their own waters.
"
The area in question represents a route worth $4.5 trillion in trade per year. China, over the past year, has expanded its takeover of island territories in the sea, with the US in particular being alarmed at satellite images purporting to show weapons systems popping up on artificial islets.
Tillerson at the time also claimed that such tactics represent steps toward a sharp escalation between Beijing and Washington. He promised to send China a “clear signal that, first, the island-building stops and, second, your access to those islands also is not going to be allowed.”
He did not make any concrete promises as to how this would be done. However, according to Time, US analysts believe this is equivalent to threatening military action or a naval blockade.
China, with its massive military and nuclear capabilities, has not been taking these warnings sitting down. A foreign ministry response on Monday said “the United States is not a party in the South China Sea issue.”
Chinese media also said earlier in January that the US is asking for "large-scale war" if it seriously intends to block China’s access to the islands. If Tillersons’ warnings become a reality, “the two sides had better prepare for a military clash,” said an editorial in The Global Times."
You can find more information if you search through the topic, however I personally was surprised that it wasn't mentioned yet.
Thoughts?
Wellll shit. Knew there were going to be tensions, but this has happened really quickly.
Now the U.S. just needs to invade China for oil and we have Fallout's storyline coming to fruition!
And now ladies and gents, watch as the U.S attempts to convince the world that
China does not belong in the South China Sea. Could be the cuban missile crisis
of our day and it also could just fizzle out into another longstanding disagreement.\
EDIT:
So on January 11th Tillerson said the following
"Building islands and then putting military assets on those islands is akin
to Russia's taking of Crimea. It's taking of territory that others lay claim to"
-Rex Tillerson
Kinda funny how quick he wants to rope Russia into this debacle. Besides
the point that the islands are under claim by US allies and enemies alike.
Tillerson's argument becomes immediately contradictory once you realize that
the US has been doing this exact same thing since WW2. At least at this
point we can began to witness a glimpse of foreign policy under the Trump
administration.

I wouldn't entirely say the US is at fault if you look at the graph points to be fair. There are many countries that claim the area but this is absurd.
US is not at fault at all. Though, i can't really see any reasons to why the Chinese are interested in tension between the US? Another Cold War?
Though, Trump will probably mess this up, so i'm happy that i live in Europe. Won't be bombed at the moment.
